Workshop: Bridge the communication with your lab supervisor

According to surveys, one-third of PhD students experience major issues with their lab supervisor. Mainly because of defective communication between them and their supervisors. As PhD students, we need our supervisors’ support and “blessing” not only to graduate, publish a paper, or get recommendation letters, but also to have a good relationship that allows us to spend less time thinking about that and more time focusing on our science!
In this workshop, we will show you how to develop the right mindset and skills needed to take your communication with your supervisor to the next level.

A senior researcher with over 20 years of experience in Cancer Biology, Epigenetics, and Genomics. The founder of “The single cell world” platform, which provides help for singlecell scientists. After earning a PhD, 2 master’s degrees, & working as a group leader for many years, I learned firsthand that success is not measured by a job title, or the number of publications. True success, for me, is defined by all the times I was able to motivate, help, or provide a smile to someone who was/is having a hard time in the laboratory. Dr Ossama Khalaf
A pharmacist who got side-tracked by his passion to research and decided to become a neuroscientist. My journey as a neuroscientist spanned 4 continents where I worked in different lab environments, and dealt with numerous hardships. Such experience helped me succeed in the face of adversity and always come out on top. And, like many PhD students, I reached an impasse with my supervisor after recurrent conflicts that jeopardized my PhD, but I learned how to handle it while maintaining a “positive” relationship with them till date. Currently, as a sciencepreneur, my number one tip will always be: “Be happy, first and foremost, everything else comes second!”

Dr. Martina Michalikova

Dr. Michalikova is not only a doctor in Theoretical Neuroscience but also a qualified writing consultant. She has run over 60 scientific writing courses for young scientists across 19 German universities. She also runs her own popular online courses targeted at helping PhD students improve their writing: Write Up Your Paper and Scientific Writing Pro. In this proposed workshop, she will engage with attendees on scientific writing skills to help PhD students develop their writing competence.
