New framework for FENS schools and training starting from 2014

The programme, which will be fully implemented by 2015, will build on popular features from the foregoing FENS-IBRO European Neuroscience Schools programme and integrate activities from across multiple educational areas within FENS.

Hence, popular activities from the previous education and training, including the network of graduate schools, exchange visits, and the new Brain Conference series will be continued and expanded under the new programme.

Several educational activities and meetings will be implemented already in 2014:

• Two high-level annual neuroscience schools will be established in collaboration with the Hertie Foundation and the Society for Neuroscience (SfN). A dedicated Selection Board will choose relevant topics and organizers from a bottom-up ‘Call for Ideas’ (now open on the FENS website).
• FENS advanced training courses in 2014 will be organized in partnership with IBRO based on a concept where a Selection Board of FENS identifies topics and organizers. The advanced training courses will offer timely and state-of-the-art hands-on training in neuroscience to advanced students, postdocs, and early career scientists. The programme for 2014 will consist of 3 courses that will be set up in collaboration with experienced European training venues.
• Support for international students in short courses and schools offered by the national graduate programmes of the FENS’-coordinated Network of European Neuroscience Schools (NENS).
• Exchange visit programme with stipends available to support students for training visits and exchange of expertise between collaborating neuroscience graduate programmes (details on the NENS webpage).
• FENS Brain Conferences will take place in 2014 in collaboration with the Brain Prize as a new partner. These intimate conferences will assemble high-ranking experts and leading scientists to discuss and present the status in topical and emerging fields of neuroscience. Dedicated slots for students interested in the subject are available.
