Join the live webinar on Neuronline: Non-coding RNAs in Nervous Systems Function and Disease
21 April 2021
FENS News, Society & Partner News
Registration now open to the webinar “Non-coding RNAs in Nervous System Function and Disease” taking place on 11 May 2021 (5:00-6:00 pm CEST). Hosted on Neuronline, the SfN virtual platform, the webinar is open to FENS and SfN members.
Thousands of non-coding (nc)RNAs have been identified with functions in processes such as translation regulation and RNA processing. Different classes of ncRNAs exist, including microRNAs, circRNAs and tRNAs, some of which are enriched in the nervous system and neural cells.
The webinar will discuss some of the functions of these ncRNAs in the developing and adult brain and highlights how their deregulation contributes to brain trauma and disease.
Date & time:
Tuesday, 11 May, 5-6 pm CEST
Speakers:
Jeroen Pasterkamp is a professor of Translational Neuroscience at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU). He is head of the department of Translational Neuroscience at UMCU and chair of the UMCU Brain Center. He also founded and is heading the MIND research facility for brain iPSC, organoid and 3D microscopy approaches. Pasterkamp’s work focuses on understanding the mechanisms that underlie neural circuit development and neurodegenerative disease. He earned his MSc and PhD in neurobiology from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and completed postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
David Henshall is a professor in the Department of Physiology & Medical Physics at the RCSI University of Medicine & Health Sciences and Director of the FutureNeuro Research Centre for Chronic & Rare Neurological Disorders, based in Dublin, Ireland. He previously worked in the USA (1997 – 2004) as a postdoctoral researcher and then PI. David’s research focuses on cell and molecular mechanisms of epilepsy and on their translation to diagnostics and treatments, particularly the role of microRNAs. He earned his BSc in pharmacology from the University of Bristol in the UK and his PhD in Neuropharmacology from the University of Edinburgh in the UK.
Noora Puhakka is a senior scientist at the University of Eastern Finland. She is focused on studying deregulated small non-coding RNAs after brain injuries. She earned her M.Sc. in applied biotechnology from the University of Kuopio, her PhD in neuroscience from the University of Eastern Finland and completed postdoctoral training from the University Medical Center Utrecht.
Gerhard Schratt is a professor for Systems Neuroscience at the Department of Health, Science and Technology (D-HEST) of the Swiss Federal Institute (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. His research focuses on molecular mechanism of brain synapse development and plasticity, with a particular focus on the role of non-coding RNAs. He earned his diploma in biochemistry and his PhD in cell biology from the University of Tuebingen, Germany, and completed postdoctoral training from Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
