Large-scale oscillations of cortical networks were the most prominent features of the human EEG noted by Berger when he made the first human scalp recordings almost 100 years ago. We now know that specific bands of activity (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma) are associated with almost all aspects of sensory-perceptual and cognitive function. Neural oscillations can be observed in isolated single neurons, small local neuronal networks, between subcortical and cortical structures and across widely distributed inter-regional networks in the neocortex. They are observed prominently during sleep and have been clearly associated with memory consolidation.  There has been an enormous recent surge of research interest in the role of neural oscillations in information processing, memory consolidation, spatial navigation, attentional deployment, and indeed consciousness itself. It is also instructive that oscillatory dynamics appear to be disrupted in many of the neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Today, few would argue against a crucial role for neural oscillations as an organizing principle for information transfer and coordinated neural processing, but there is much yet to be learned and discussed. This special issue seeks to bring together a series of empirical papers, targeted reviews and opinion pieces that will lay out the latest understanding of the neurobiological architecture underlying oscillatory activity as well as its functional role in perception and higher cognition.
