Two discoveries in 2003 fundamentally changed our understanding of the serotonin system:

  1. Tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), as second and brain-specific serotonin synthesizing enzyme besides TPH1 in the periphery, establishing the duality of the serotonin system
  2. Serotonylation, the protein modification by covalent serotonin binding, establishing a novel pathway of serotonin signalling besides its receptors.

This meeting will present and discuss the latest news on serotonin signalling and functions in the brain and in the periphery gained after these discoveries.
