An exciting doctoral/PhD position is available to study the role of neural stem cells in viral
encephalitis and seizures in the lab of Prof. Dr. Sonja Bröer (view key publications here:

Job description:
Epilepsies are among the most common neurological diseases worldwide. A high-risk event
for seizures is an infection of the brain, although very little is known about the mechanisms of
seizure development. We investigate whether infection-induced seizures could change the
birth and maturation of nerve cells (neurogenesis) and thus contribute to the development of
the disease. In this project, initial insights into the time course of neurogenesis, as well as the
fate of these cells in the epileptic brain, are going to be collected. The results can be used to
develop treatments that prevent or modify the development of the disease.
The candidate will use a number of in vivo and in vitro techniques (stereotactic surgery,
behavioral studies, EEG acquisition and evaluation, or/and flow cytometry,
immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and (stem) cell culture) to study the course
of the disease and develop therapy concepts based on the findings.
The ideal candidate should be a dynamic, highly motivated person who is willing to learn the
techniques and models mentioned and carry them out independently. The doctorate can be
completed as a PhD thesis within the framework of the Dahlem Research School Biomedical
Sciences. The position serves for one’s own scientific qualification. We offer the possibility to
credit training time as a specialist for veterinary pharmacology and toxicology (Fachtierärzt:in
für Pharmakologie und Toxikologie).
Requirements:
Approbation in Veterinary Medicine or graduate (Diplom/Master) of Natural/Life Sciences
Desirable:
– Above-average degree and interest in independent, scientific work
– FELASA certificate and first experience with mouse handling
– Good knowledge of the English language is a prerequisite, knowledge of German is a plus.
