Two Pre- or Postdoctoral Positions in Primate Visual Neurophysiology

Position: Post-doctoral Position

Deadline: 28 November 2022

Employment Start Date: 1 January 2023

Contract Length: 2 or 3 years

City: Magdeburg

Country: Germany

Institution: Otto-von-Guericke-University

Department: Sensory Physiology

Description:

Profs. Kristine Krug and Andrew Parker of the Sensory Physiology group at the Otto-von-Guericke Magdeburg seek to hire two researchers (pre- or postdoctoral) in primate visual neurophysiolgy. The research group investigates how neuronal interactions shape 3D-perception and perceptual decisions in primates. We research the relationship between neurons, circuits and behaviour in Rhesus monkeys and humans, with methods including cellular neurophysiology, high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cutting-edge brain intervention methods, including optogenetics and electrical micro-stimulation.

Position 1 (326/2022):
In this DFG-funded project, we will use photorealistic visual images to understand the neuronal integration of visual cues for depth and shape in the ventral stream pathways of the primate brain. Working with Andrew Parker and other members of the Sensory Physiology group, we plan a comprehensive investigation of how different cues to depth are combined in generating the responses of single V4 and PIT neurons, specifically examining combinations of binocular depth with shading, texture or motion parallax cues and comparing the contribution of single neuron signalling with population encoding. The project will use advanced computer graphics to prepare naturalistic images of 3D objects in which different cues to depth can be independently manipulated. An interest in quantitative neuroscience will be essential for this project.
The post is either at pre- or postdoctoral level and will provide an opportunity to register for a PhD degree at the university, for which a separate application will be required after appointment.
Start date: as soon as possible for three years
Salary: TVL-13; ca. ? 2800-5500 per month pre-tax dependent on qualifications and experience
Further details about the position can be found here: https://ovgu.b-ite.careers/a1v5d

Postdoc 2 (331/2022):
We seek a postdoctoral scientist to conduct high-dimensional neurophysiological recordings and optogenetic stimulation in Rhesus monkeys investigating the neural coding for naturalistic 3D-motion stimuli and decision-making under social influence. They will collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team while taking responsibility for research progress and research reporting, presentations at scientific meetings etc. Main responsibilities include contributing to the development of methodology, the conduct of animal experiments and the fostering of international collaborations.
Start date: 1.1.2023 for two years (with the potential of an extension for another two years).
Salary: TVL-13; ca. ? 4000-5500 per month pre-tax dependent on qualifications and experience
