Super-resolution imaging and diffusion modeling in brain extracellular space
Position: Post-doctoral Position
Deadline: 1 December 2022
Employment Start Date: 23 February 2023
Contract Length: 36 months
City: Bilbao
Country: Spain
Institution: University of the Basque Country
Department: Neuroscience
Description:
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our team for a Spain/US collaborative project. The aim is to model diffusion in the brain extracellular space (ECS), based on super-resolved microscopy images of neuropil in live mouse brain slices. The ultimate goal is to learn how ECS structure dynamically shape signaling and metabolite clearance pathways in the brain. The selected candidate will be trained in super-resolution STED/SUSHI microscopy (Tonnesen et al, Cell 2018) to effectively map out ECS structure and dynamics, and be involved in building a computational model of diffusion based on these images.
We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with a PhD degree, or equivalent, and potentially postdoctoral experience in bio-photonics, advanced optical microscopy, biophysics, diffusion modeling, or other relevant areas. The work involves daily usage of an advanced custom-built STED microscope and experience with, or interest in, such equipment is a plus. The candidate should have scientific curiosity, patience and stamina, be capable of independent thinking, and have the motivation to take charge of and advance the project. The project is highly collaborative with a partner lab in Texas that are specialists on computational modeling. We ideally want someone who will contribute to an enthusiastic, productive and fun work environment, including training and mentoring of junior lab members. Within our group we openly share all data, ideas and technical knowledge. We encourage anyone who, more or less, meet these criteria to apply.
We offer 2-3 years postdoctoral salary through a full postdoctoral contract also covering social insurance, duration depending on starting date. Our research group resides in new facilities at the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience in Bilbao (Spain). We are a young and dynamic lab on an upward trajectory, and we embrace diversity, inclusivity and positive encouragement.
Practical info: The project will be carried out in the Tønnesen group (AKA Neuronal Excitability Lab) hosted at the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience located at the Leioa Campus of the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain, with a tentative starting date 01 February 2023 (flexible).
