Postdoctoral Project Scientist (m/w/d) – Fries Lab

Position: Post-doctoral Position

Deadline: 15 September 2022

Contract Length: The position is for three years initially, with the possibility of extension.

City: Frankfurt am Main

Country: Germany

Institution: Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI) gGmbH for Neuroscience in Cooperation with Max Planck Society

Department: Fries Department

The Fries Lab is looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral project scientist who is interested in developing novel approaches to human neurotherapy.

Your tasks:

Modern non-invasive and invasive electrophysiological techniques provide information about the state of the human brain with high bandwidth and temporal resolution. In addition, wearables assess many relevant physiological parameters. The project scientist will use those recordings to develop personalized neurofeedback-based approaches for neurotherapy. Initially, this will focus on healthy human subjects and non-invasive techniques (MEG and EEG). Subsequently, this can lead to the inclusion of diseased human subjects and invasive techniques (ECoG), in collaboration with clinical partners. The position is not a typical postdoctoral position, because its primary focus is on the development of therapeutic approaches. Yet another important focus will be the publication of the obtained scientific advances. The project scientist will join an existing international team with expertise in human and animal electrophysiology, and will be able to use an outstanding infrastructure.

What you have to offer:

Candidates should have or expect a Ph.D. in neuroscience or a neuroscience-related discipline. Experience with human non-invasive or invasive electrophysiology is a plus, programming experience including Python or the willingness to learn Python is required, and the candidate should have an interest in developing and/or applying new technology for neurotherapy. Yet, the main criteria are a strong academic track record and a dedication to performing excellent brain research. Applications should include a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of university degrees, lists of university courses with obtained grades, and the names and e-mail addresses of two scientists, who can provide references (do not include reference letters). Please send your application materials, with the reference “Neurotherapy”, in electronic format (ideally in one PDF file) to office.fries(at)

What we offer:

The position is for three years initially, with the possibility of extension, and can start at any time in 2022 or 2023. This call will remain open until 15 September 2022. The salary will be as for a classical postdoctoral position. Equal opportunities and diversity are important to us. All candidates are equally welcome and encouraged to apply. The ESI offers a family-friendly work environment with affordable child-care in the immediate vicinity, free parking on the premises, and is easily accessible by public transport.
