Description:
The research group Cellular Neurobiology at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, Ruhr-Universität Bochum is
seeking to fill a
PhD student position (m,f,d) – 3 years, TV-L E13, 65%
“Glutamate Receptor Function in Metabolic Stress Conditions“
We are looking for a motivated coworker, who brings scientific curiosity, independent thinking and a strong interest in
experimental studies to our interdisciplinary and active team. The position will be part of the DFG-funded research unit
FOR2795: Synapses under Stress.
Position
The PhD project is part of our research project „Impact and adaptation of glutamate receptor signaling in metabolic
stress conditions“. In this project we investigate, how ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are affected by
impairments in cellular energy supply, as it e.g. occurs during stroke. To obtain real-time information, we will rely on
innovative approaches to control iGluRs with light (see https://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/cellneuro/). This allows us to
probe how different receptor subtypes and synapses respond to short inhibitions of cellular metabolism and subsequent
changes in brain tissue. The main techniques used in these in situ studies will be patch-clamp electrophysiology, modern
imaging approaches and tailored, chemo-optogenetic methods. Besides a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art
methodology, international collaboration partners will support the project, thus offering excellent perspectives for your
scientific development.
Your profile
– Required is an excellent university degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine, or a related discipline.
– Further mandatory skills are a very high motivation to engage in independent scientific research, the ability to work in
a team, and very good English skills.
– Candidates should further have some experience in the areas of neurobiology as well as electrophysiology or
fluorescence microscopy.
We offer
– Open work atmosphere and employment at one of the largest German universities; part of the University Alliance
Ruhr.
– Salary and social benefits according to German/NRW TV-L E13/65%. The contract is initially limited to 3 years.
Further information
The position will not be associated with teaching obligations, in case it is exclusively third-party funded. Travel expenses
for interviews cannot be refunded.
