The Reward & Aversion Lab is searching for talented researchers to apply for PhD scholarships to the Portuguese Science Agency – FCT (, and to enroll the PhD program at Host institution. The PhD project will be delineated with the candidate to fulfill her/his expectations.

The Lab
In the Reward & Aversion Lab we are interested in understanding how our brain encodes valence, and how this information is conveyed into motivated behaviors. We use a combination of tools including behavioral evaluation, optogenetics, electrophysiology, pharmacology and live imaging with genetically-encoded sensors in rodents. We are performing these studies in physiological conditions but also in rodent models of neurodevelopmental challenges such as prenatal stress. Ultimately, by unveiling the neurobiological underpinnings of motivated behavior, one can contribute for the mechanistic interpretation of neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression and addiction.

We have a collaborative and open lab environment, and diversity is welcome. The candidates will have the opportunity to work in a stimulating environment and with the possibility of developing part of the work in the laboratory of external collaborators.

Our lab is located in a dynamic biomedical institute, in the north of Portugal, a vibrant region with excellent food, wine and friendly people.
